The Russian architectural bureau “Jauza project” won the first prize at the international competition for the urban-architectural solution of the hinterland of Sava Square, on the site of the former railway station.
The expert jury assessed that the winning solution provided “the most complete answer to the complexity of the location and the set design tasks”. The area of the square is seen as part of a wider urban system and is being shaped as a new public centre – Gallery Square. A special quality is the connection of various functions into a unique, clearly organized system of public spaces. The contents of the History Museum of Serbia are extended to the square, while greenery and spaces for play and recreation contribute to the variety of ways of use. This space includes, among other things, a metro station where the first two subway lines will cross, a museum and an elementary school, as well as bicycle and pedestrian tracks.
In the explanation of the jury, it is emphasized that the solution stood out from the others due to the clarity and strength of the basic idea, the level of its consistent spatial elaboration and the ability to combine different functions, ambiances and directions of movement into one recognizable and functionally convicting whole.
The team of the “Jauza project” bureau won a prize of EUR 40,000 for the first-placed solution, the second prize of EUR 20,000 was awarded to the team of authors from “Shandong Hi-Speed International Planning & Design Company KFT”, Belgrade branch, and the third prize in the value of EUR 10,000 went to the company “LDA Design Consulting Ltd Benjamin Walker”.
The president of the jury was the City Urbanist Marko Stojčić, and the members of the jury were the representative of the Agency for Spatial Planning and Urbanism of Serbia Natalija Belić, the representative of “Belgrade Metro and Train” public utility Stefan Obućina, the representative of the Urban Institute of Belgrade Maja Joković Potkonjak and the representative of Belgrade Waterfront Daliborka Stojaković.
